This is in my humble opinion the most beautiful French love song, sung by Françoise Hardy in 1973.
Actually, a real story…
The English version was number 1 in the UK, but the lyrics were somehow different. I enclose a quick translation, you will have the meaning without some of the subtle nuances of course, but listening to this song I am sure you will understand how beautiful it is.

On the other side of the phone,
There is your voice,
And there are the words,
I will not say.
All those words which scare
When they don’t make laugh,
Which are in too many films,
Songs and books
I would like to say them
And I would like to live them
I won’t do it
I want, I can’t
I am lonely to die
But I know where you are
I am coming
Wait for me
We are going to get to know each other
Prepare your time
For you, I have all mine
I would like to arrive
I stay, I hate myself
I will not be able
I want, I can’t
I should speak to you
I should arrive
Or I should sleep
I worry you will be deaf
I worry you will be craven
I worry I will be intrusive
I can not tell you
That I love you… maybe
But if some day you think you love me
Don’t think your memories bother me
And run, run until you lose your breath
Come to me
If some day you think you love me
And if that day you (grieve*) feel it difficult
To find where all those roads lead you,
Come to me
If the disgust of life comes in you
If the tiredness of life settles in you
Think of me
Think of me
But if some day you think you love me
Don’t bethink me like a problem
And run, run until you lose your breath
Come to me
If some day you think you love me
Don’t wait for a day, for a week
Cause you don’t know where life is leading you
Come to me
If the disgust of life comes in you
If the tiredness of life settles in you
Think of me
Think of me
But if you…
*double meaning with the word “peine”, meaning “pain, grieve” and “difficulty”
